Moving to Ireland – Move to Ireland
Move Switzerland – Ireland: Your Immigration Project to the Emerald Isle
Ireland, often affectionately referred to as the “Emerald Isle,” attracts many emigrants with its unparalleled blend of vibrant culture and breathtaking nature. Life in Ireland is marked by a warm society, rich cultural traditions, and landscapes filled with lush green meadows, dramatic cliffs, and historic castles. In the cities, life is lively: People meet at pubs for a Guinness and live music, celebrate local festivals with neighbors, and enjoy the famous Irish hospitality. Even outside the metropolises, Ireland offers much: picturesque coasts, stunning nature, and plenty of outdoor activities. Those who choose Ireland will quickly find that the island excites with a variety of opportunities for both work and leisure.
The lifestyle in Ireland combines modernity and tradition. While Dublin, the capital, offers an international flair with many young professionals, students, and expats from all over the world, life in rural areas and smaller towns is more relaxed and communal. The Irish are known for being extremely sociable, humorous, and helpful – newcomers are generally warmly welcomed. Culturally, Ireland has a lot to offer: from literature (such as James Joyce or Oscar Wilde) to world-famous music and dance (Irish Folk, Riverdance) to sports traditions like Gaelic Football or Hurling, in which even outsiders can participate or at least enjoy watching. Ireland also pleasantly surprises gastronomically – besides the classic Irish stew and fresh seafood, a lively restaurant scene has developed that combines traditional and international cuisine.
In terms of cost of living, it should be noted that Ireland – especially Dublin – is one of the more expensive places in Europe. Compared to Switzerland, everyday costs are somewhat lower, but especially rents in Dublin and the surrounding areas almost reach Swiss levels. On the other hand, food and services are generally cheaper than in Zurich or Geneva. In smaller cities like Cork or Galway, life is even more affordable than in the capital. However, the slightly higher price level in Ireland is often offset by higher net salaries in international companies, moderate tax rates compared to the EU, and, above all, the English language, which is a significant advantage compared to many other emigration destinations. As an English-speaking country, the language barrier is eliminated for Swiss citizens (if they speak English), which greatly facilitates the transition to the new home. Furthermore, the Irish economy is booming in sectors such as IT, pharmaceuticals, and finance, offering exciting job opportunities for emigrants.
Nature and climate in Ireland also differ significantly from Switzerland: Instead of snow-capped Alps, Ireland offers mild winters, moderate summers, and overall a wetter, Atlantic climate. Snow is rare, but a bit of rain is almost a daily occurrence – which makes the island so beautifully green. Rainbows that appear over the Atlantic, rugged cliffs like the Cliffs of Moher, or enchanted lake landscapes in Connemara make up for many a grey day. If you love spending time outdoors, you will love Ireland’s coastal paths, national parks, and charming villages. Overall, Ireland offers emigrants a high quality of life where work and leisure are well-balanced, community is important, and with the shared language and European freedom of movement, settling in is relatively quick.

Move to Ireland – Shipping Options
For your move from Switzerland to Ireland, we offer various suitable transport options. We can generally transport nearly everything that is important for your home or office – from ordinary household items to office furniture and equipment, to vehicles and appliances – provided that Irish import regulations permit it. We are happy to advise you in advance on what can be taken and what you should be aware of or possibly leave behind.
Since a move to Ireland is an intra-European transport, the main part of the journey is usually done by land and sea. Typically, your goods will be transported by truck from Switzerland to the French Atlantic coast and then shipped to Ireland by ferry. Commonly used routes include ferry connections from France (Cherbourg) to Ireland (Dublin or Rosslare). The moving truck travels with the ferry, so it is practically a continuous land transport with a short sea passage. This method is usually the most efficient and cost-effective, as it allows for a direct transport without transshipment. Alternatively, in some cases, the route via the UK may be considered (transit through France and England with ferry passages over the English Channel and the Irish Sea). However, due to the post-Brexit customs formalities for transit through the UK, we prefer using direct ferries from the EU to Ireland to save time and reduce bureaucracy.
For smaller moves or particularly urgent shipments, air freight is also an option. Although air freight is significantly more expensive, it delivers your goods to the Emerald Isle within one to two days – an option for important documents or a few suitcases, while the rest of the belongings follow by truck. In practice, most of our customers choose direct truck transport with a ferry, as it delivers your entire belongings safely to Ireland within a few days to a week.
Depending on the size of your household, we can organize your move either as a groupage or exclusive transport. With groupage, you share the truck space with other customers and only pay for the space your goods take up – a very cost-efficient solution, especially for medium and small moves where a full truck is not needed. For very large moves, we can provide a full truck exclusively for your move (direct or exclusive transport), so your household will be transported directly without detours. For comparison: The combined land/ferry transport from Switzerland to Ireland usually takes only a few days to about a week (depending on the route and possible stops), while a separate sea freight container – if it is even an option – would take much longer. Pure sea freight plays a minimal role for relocations within Europe and is not typically used by us, as the truck route already guarantees a fast and reliable process.

Customs and Import Regulations for Your Move to Ireland
As a specialized moving company, we know that customs regulations are often one of the biggest concerns for international moves. The good news: Since Ireland is part of the European Union, personal belongings for a move from Switzerland to Ireland can generally be imported without significant hurdles. We know the procedures inside out and have the necessary contacts to make customs clearance as smooth as possible. Our experts oversee and coordinate the entire process to ensure your belongings are safely and promptly cleared through customs.
In principle, household goods (referred to as relocation goods) can be imported duty-free to Ireland, as long as they are for personal use and not intended for resale. These include:
- Household items: Personal belongings and furnishings, such as furniture, electronics, decorations, dishes, books, clothing, etc.
- Vehicles: Private motor vehicles such as cars or motorcycles, possibly also motorhomes, trailers, or boats that are part of your household.
- Household supplies: Usual supplies of food and beverages for personal use (in household quantities).
- Pets: Household and companion animals (such as dogs, cats, and even horses) can be brought along as part of your move.
- Work and hobby equipment: Portable tools, musical instruments, computers, and other devices you need for your profession or hobby.
These items can be brought with you as part of your move from Switzerland to Ireland without having to pay customs duties. It is important that these items have been in your possession and use for a reasonable amount of time before the move and are still for your personal use. Our moving specialists will help you create a complete inventory of your goods – this list is required for customs clearance and will accompany your shipment.
Please note that certain goods are also restricted or regulated within the EU in terms of quantity. Specifically, alcohol and tobacco have set limits, which should not be exceeded when you bring these items with your move. If you exceed the allowed quantities, taxes or fees may apply. Similar rules apply to larger quantities of coffee or other specific goods. We would be happy to advise you on which quantities are acceptable. Pets are of course allowed to accompany you to Ireland, but they must meet the EU pet regulations: Animals require an EU pet passport with microchip identification and a valid rabies vaccination. We will assist you in advance to ensure all the necessary documents are obtained. Weapons, ammunition, or dangerous items require special permits – these should not be transported without prior discussion. If you are unsure whether a particular item can be brought to Ireland, we will be happy to assist you.
Upon arrival in Ireland, your belongings will be presented to customs. In most cases, we handle this for you through our local partners on-site. If you are importing a vehicle, we will also fully assist you: Your car will first be cleared through customs and then registered in Ireland. This requires, among other things, a technical inspection (similar to the motor vehicle inspection in Switzerland) by the Irish authorities and the assignment of new license plates. As part of our service, we provide you with information on the necessary documents (e.g., vehicle registration, purchase receipt, etc.) and we organize the transport of the vehicle. Thanks to EU regulations, private vehicles that are part of the relocation goods can usually be imported without customs duties. However, you should have owned the vehicle for at least six months before the move and plan to use it for at least one year after the import to benefit from the customs exemption (the resale of imported vehicles immediately after the move is not allowed).
In summary, ordinary personal belongings can be easily brought along when moving from Switzerland to Ireland. Altaventura ensures that all forms are completed correctly and regulations are followed. This way, we avoid delays, and you will receive your furniture and valuables in Ireland without unexpected complications.
Information is subject to change – as of May 2025. (For your move to Ireland, we will be happy to inform you about the most current regulations.)

Popular Expat Locations in Ireland
Ireland not only welcomes millions of tourists every year but also numerous new residents from abroad. Expats – people living abroad – are found throughout the country, but some places are particularly popular and have larger international communities. For emigrants from Switzerland and other countries, it is worth taking a look at these regions and cities:
Dublin
Dublin is the vibrant center of Ireland and the main attraction for many expats. The Dublin metropolitan area is home to over 1.3 million people. The city combines rich historical heritage – from medieval buildings to the famous Trinity College – with modern dynamism. Today, Dublin is a European tech and financial hub: Many multinational companies have their branches here (Google, Facebook/Meta, Apple, Pfizer, and many more), providing a steady supply of highly qualified jobs. As the country’s largest city, Dublin offers everything one would expect from a metropolis: a vibrant cultural life with theaters, museums, and music events, countless restaurants, pubs, and shopping opportunities, as well as excellent infrastructure with an international airport and connections to the rest of Europe. Expats appreciate the mix of Irish tradition and cosmopolitan flair. However, one should be aware that the cost of living here is the highest in Ireland – especially rents in sought-after neighborhoods are very high. However, those who find a job in Dublin’s thriving tech or finance sector can often expect a good salary. The city is ideal for those seeking career opportunities and urban life and are willing to embrace the sometimes hectic pace of a booming capital. Dublin impresses with its unique atmosphere: historical yet young, busy yet cozy – whether at a pub chat or a walk along the River Liffey.
Cork
Cork, the second-largest city in the Republic of Ireland, is located in the south of the island and has around 210,000 inhabitants (slightly more in the greater area). The city is often referred to as the cultural heart of the south and has retained the charm of a manageable big city. Cork has a long trading and seafaring history – the natural harbor of Cork is one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Today, the “Rebel City” (nickname from Irish history) is a vibrant university town with a growing tech scene and many international companies.
For expats who are looking for a quieter life with access to all modern amenities and a strong community, Cork offers the ideal mix. The city center is pedestrian-friendly and characterized by traditional markets, boutiques, art galleries, and cafés. Ireland’s culture is still very present here, but in Cork, it feels like you are also part of an open and modern city. Those living in Cork benefit from lower living costs compared to Dublin, but still have access to numerous employment opportunities. Those who love nature will appreciate Cork’s surroundings, which are characterized by gentle hills, unspoiled coasts, and picturesque fishing villages. Cork also attracts more and more expats from healthcare, education, and technology sectors.
Galway
Galway in the west of Ireland has become one of the most popular places for expats in recent years. The small but lively city is located on the Atlantic coast and is particularly popular with people looking for a quieter lifestyle but still appreciating the charm of an urban setting. Galway has around 80,000 inhabitants but attracts many international visitors and newcomers with its internationally influenced festival scene (e.g., Galway International Arts Festival), its traditional Irish culture, and proximity to stunning nature. Expats enjoy a high quality of life and a welcoming, open community. Galway is ideal for outdoor fans: hiking and excursions along the west coast, as well as walks through the well-kept streets of the city or along the harbor, are popular leisure activities. The art scene is also very lively, and the city is considered a creative hub of the island.
