There are 12 types of temporary residency permits, but some are more relevant to potential expats than others. These include the General Work Permit, Business Permit, Essential Skills Visa, and Study Permit. If you have lived in South Africa for the required time, it is advisable to apply for a permanent residence permit. Depending on your situation, you can apply for a retirement permit, a spouse permit, a relative permit, or a five-year permanent work permit.

If you have lived in the country for a long time, you may consider acquiring South African citizenship. This is possible if you have permanent residency and have lived in the country for more than five years, two years if you are married to a South African citizen.
